No. 768: Halving the production cost of automotive steel sheets (September 9, 2013)

Technology:
A research team led by Hidetoshi Fujii of Osaka University developed a technology to halve the production cost of high intensity automotive steel sheets. The research team successfully made rare metals unnecessary by improving the crystal architecture inside a metal. The existing high-intensity enduring steel sheet mostly contains about 10% nickel.

The new technology utilizes the phenomenon that atoms inside a metal move and change their configuration to harden the metal should pressure be applied on it externally. The research team made a 2-centimeter-square steel sheet on trial and tested its tension strength for 10 minutes. The test showed that the trial steel sheet extended more and stronger than the high tension steel sheet. The new technology is expected to open up the road to the application of high intensity steel sheets to housing. The research team plans to put the new technology into practical application in five years.
